The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team opened its home schedule by splitting a pair of weekend matches.

Sandburg opened by hanging on for a 4-3 Region IV victory over Richard J. Daley on Friday before dropping a 4-0 decision Sunday afternoon against Iowa Western.

The Chargers struck first Friday against the Bulldogs with a goal in the third minute from Stephen Nganga (Nairobi, Kenya/St. Mary’s) off an assist from Sam Walton (Newcastle, England/Monkseaton).

Tied 2-2 in the 51st minute, Javier Pavon (Tombull, Texas/Klein Oak) gave Sandburg the lead again with an assist from Victor Dantas (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/CESEC). Jonathan Bustos (Irapuato, Mexico/Streator) extended the Chargers’ lead to 4-2 in the 69th minute by converting a penalty kick for his second goal of the contest.

Daley answered with a goal to make it 4-3, but the Chargers’ back line stood strong to clinch Sandburg’s first victory of the season.

The Chargers (1-2, 1-0) were shut out by Iowa Western on Sunday in a rainy match that had multiple stoppages because of lightning in the area.

Sandburg’s next action is a Region IV match at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Truman.
