Franzoni Highlights Chargers’ Strong 2nd Round at Augie Highland Classic

The Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team shaved 28 shots off its score in the second round, highlighted by an 80 from freshman Emily Franzoni (Canton, Ill./Canton), in the Augustana Highland Classic over the weekend at Highland Springs.

Franzoni’s 8-over-par second round on Sunday was 19 strokes better than her first-round total as she finished tied for 34th with a 179 for the tournament. The Chargers were led by freshman Hayley Guilinger (Thomson, Ill./West Carroll), who tied for 27th after shooting 176 (93-83) over the two days.

Freshman Renee Scheider (Lena, Ill./Lena-Winslow) shot in the 90s both days for Sandburg, totaling a 189 (99-90). Other scores for the Chargers came from Katelyn Davis (Henderson, Ill./Galesburg) with a 197 (94-103) and freshman Claudia Hazell (Melton, Australia/Victoria University) with a 202 (98-104).

Competing as an individual, freshman Grace Scott (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) turned in a solid weekend with a total of 182 (95-87), which was good for 39th.

Sandburg’s 356 on Sunday was a huge improvement from the 384 it posted in Saturday’s first round. The Chargers, the only team from a two-year school in the field, finished eighth, 12 shots back of seventh-place Millikin. Vitterbo (323-308-631) won by 28 shots over host Augustana.

Sandburg will compete in the Monmouth College Invite on Friday and Saturday and Gibson Woods.
