The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team cruised to a 25-12, 25-19, 25-16 sweep of Monmouth JV on Tuesday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in the Chargers’ home opener.

Sandburg trailed for just 11 points in the match while improving to 3-5 on the season. Freshman Hannah Thompson (Blandinsville, Ill./West Prairie) led a balanced Chargers attack with nine kills while totaling 11 digs.

Setters Emma Derry (Augusta, Ill./Southeaster) and Camerin Huizenga (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) each had 12 assists for the Chargers, with Huizenga also totaling a team-leading three aces. Libero Adre Vetter (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) notched 23 digs for Sandburg.

Lexi Strange (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) put down seven kills for Sandburg, while sophomore Anna Schierer (LaFayette, Ill./Stark County) racked up a team-best three blocks.

Freshman Jordan Price (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) keyed a 10-1 burst in the first set that gave the Chargers a 12-5 advantage. After back-to-back points from the Fighting Scots, Sandburg ran off six straight for an 18-7 lead.

Monmouth led 16-14 in the second before a Price kill opened a 10-0 run to set up set point for the Chargers. Huizenga served up a pair of aces during the stretch, helping Sandburg to a two-set advantage.

The Chargers led 9-8 in the third before pulling away with five straight points, which featured a kill and a block from Strange. Another five-point run later in the set lifted the Chargers to a 21-11 advantage.

“Everyone got in and everyone played well,” Chargers coach Todd Winkler said. “We couldn’t draw it up much better than that.”

Sandburg will play at Kishwaukee at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Arrowhead Conference action before returning home at 6 p.m. Sept. 12 to face Illinois Valley in another league match.
