Kevwe Akpore, who spent last season an assistant for the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team, is serving as the Chargers’ interim coach for the remainder of 2017 campaign.

Akpore took over last week for Kevin Mahlan, who resigned following Sandburg’s 4-2 victory Tuesday at Malcolm X. The Chargers picked up a 6-1 victory Friday night over McHenry County in Akpore’s first game before falling 3-0 to Waubonsee on Saturday. Friday’s win matched the team’s largest margin of victory this season and was the Chargers’ highest scoring output of the year.

Akpore has been a staple of the Galesburg soccer community for nearly three decades. He served as the women’s soccer coach at Knox from 2001-02 after a three-year stint as an assistant, and he was the Prairie Fire’s men’s soccer coach from 2010-11. He also spent several years as a midfielder with FC Galesburg and has volunteered as a coach with the Knox County YMCA and Galesburg High School.

Akpore and his wife, Tracy, reside in Galesburg and have adult twin daughters, Kiara and Sade, who played collegiately at Southern Illinois Edwardsville.

Sandburg is 6-10-1 overall this season and 6-5-1 against Region IV opponents. The Chargers host Oakton at 1 p.m. Saturday before wrapping up the regular season Oct. 19 at Kankakee. The Region IV tournament begins Oct. 21.
