The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team is within striking distance of qualifying for the NJCAA Division II national championship at the midway point of the Region IV tournament.

The Chargers are in fourth place after Thursday’s opening round of the tournament at Senica’s Oak Ridge, which was extended to 27 holes because of inclement weather in the forecast for today. With today’s action postponed, the final 27 holes of the 54-hole tournament are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Sandburg’s total of 467 is just four shots back of second-place Lake County and one behind third-place Oakton. The top two teams earn trips the national tournament May 21-24 at Glenlakes Golf Club in Foley, Ala. The top six individuals from non-qualifying teams also advance to the national tournament. Scoring will still be counted as three 18-hole rounds.

Black Hawk leads with a 27-hole total of 447.

Freshman Brayden Reece (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) paced the Chargers with a 2-over-par 74 over the first 18 holes Thursday. Sophomore Ryan Hansen (Neponset, Ill./Kewanee), in search of his second straight trip to nationals, added a 3-over 75.

Sandburg’s other scores in its first-round total from twins Brady and Bryce Grafton (Orion, Ill./Orion), who shot 80 and 81, respectively. Sophomore Michael Curry (Petersburg, Ill./PORTA) carded an 84 for the Chargers.

Sandburg is looking to qualify for nationals as a team for the sixth time in program history and the first time since the 2014-15 season. The Chargers have qualified a team or individual for nationals in each of the last five seasons and in nine of the last 10 years.
