Arrowhead Conference leader Highland was able to hold off the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team Thursday night, handing the Chargers a 76-70 loss.

Sandburg (8-11, 2-2), which would have pulled into a tie for first place with the Cougars (11-5, 4-0) with a win, was led by 19 points from Madison Lowe (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap). Lowe hit three 3-pointers and went 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.

The Chargers trailed 18-13 after a quarter but pulled within 38-37 at halftime. Highland, however, extended its lead to 57-48 after the third.

Willow Porter added 16 points for the Chargers.

Most of Highland’s damage came from Wynter Townsend, who hit five 3s and scored a game-high 31, and Sharee Herrod, who added 20 points.

Sandburg will play at No. 8-ranked Illinois Central at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday before returning to conference play at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at Sauk Valley.
