Sandburg Men Stopped by Cougars in Battle for Top Spot in Conference

The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team took a lead into halftime, but Highland rallied to beat the Chargers 88-75 on Thursday night in a battle of Arrowhead Conference unbeatens.
The Chargers (14-8, 3-1) saw their four-game win streak come to an end despite taking a 39-37 lead into the locker room. The win moves the Cougars (14-6, 4-0) into sole possession of first place in the conference.
Kourtlandt Martin (Evansville, Ind./Central) and Matt Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) each scored 19 to lead Sandburg. Martin’s night was highlighted by a 9-for-11 effort from the free-throw line, and Wendling knocked down three 3-pointers.
Sophomore guard Tyler Houston (Knoxville, Ill./Knoxville) added four 3s and 17 points for Sandburg. Freshman forward Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) scored 11 for the Chargers.
Highland had five players score in double figures, led by JayQuan McCloud’s game-high 24 points, including four 3s.
Sandburg’s next action is 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at Sauk Valley.
