The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team grabbed the lead late in the third quarter and used a big run in the fourth to pull away from Black Hawk for a 61-49 Arrowhead Conference victory on Tuesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

Sandburg (8-10, 2-1) had trouble scoring for most of the first 30 minutes before coming alive late in the third. Trailing 35-32 late in the third, sophomore guard Alivia Cummings (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) ignited a 7-0 run to close the period and give the Chargers the lead for good. Freshman Danayzia Stuckey (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) added two free throws and knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Chargers a 39-35 advantage.

Stuckey made it seven straight points of her own with a pair of free throws that opened the fourth as she finished the night with 10 points, one of four Chargers in double figures.

Sandburg led 43-41 with 6:54 left before scoring 13 straight over the next 2:25 to go up by 15. Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) sparked the run with a driving layup and added a steal that led to a three-point play during the stretch.

“We were finally able to find some offense late in the second half, and we did a good job of creating scoring from our defense,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “For a while, we didn’t shoot very well from anywhere except the line, but those two stretches late in the game were the difference for us.”

Madison Lowe (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) had a game-high 16 points to lead the Chargers. Jordan Price (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) finished a rebound shy of a double-double, posting 12 points and a team-leading nine rebounds. Cummings added 11 points for Sandburg, highlighted by a 5-for-6 night from the line.

Lynsey Gradert scored 11 to lead the Braves (6-11, 2-2).

Sandburg heads up to face Highland in another Arrowhead contest at 5 p.m. Thursday.
