Registration Available for Sandburg Youth Sports Camps

Young athletes can get firsthand instruction from Carl Sandburg College coaches and players this spring and summer at sports camps for soccer, golf, softball, cross country, baseball, basketball and volleyball.

Campers will learn the fundamentals of their sport(s), with an emphasis on having fun. Each camp will be led by Chargers coaches, who have decades of experience at the collegiate level, and current Sandburg athletes will assist with individual instruction at some camps.

Details for each sport’s camp are as follows:

SOCCER

Practice juggling, receiving, passing and playing variable games. Camp also includes a focus on proper warm-ups. Takes place April 7-8 at the Knox County YMCA soccer complex. Open for students in grades K-12. Times are 9-11 a.m. for grades K-7 and noon-2 p.m. for grades 8-12. Led by Chargers men’s soccer coach Kevwe Akpore. Registration deadline is noon March 26. Cost is $30 and includes a T-shirt. Rain date is April 14-15 at the Lake Storey soccer fields.

GOLF

Practice swing technique, learn about the mental approach to golf and more. Camp takes place 8:30 a.m.-noon May 30-31 at Lake Bracken Country Club. Open for students who have completed grades 4-8. Led by Chargers women’s golf assistant coach Gail Hannam. Registration deadline is noon May 18. Cost is $30 and includes a T-shirt. NOTE: Students must provide their own clubs, and no refunds will be issued in case of inclement weather.

SOFTBALL

Practice hitting, pitching and fielding while also focusing on offensive and defensive strategies. Camp takes place June 4-6 at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex on Sandburg’s Main Campus in Galesburg. Open to students who have completed grades 4-12. Times are 10 a.m.-noon for grades 4-7 and 1-3 p.m. for grades 8-12. Led by Chargers coach Todd Winkler. Registration deadline is noon May 23. Cost is $40 and includes a T-shirt. Rain location is John M. Lewis Gymnasium on Sandburg’s Main Campus.

CROSS COUNTRY

Practice proper warm-up, stretching, pacing, breathing, striding, arm carriage and cool-down. Camp takes place 5-6 p.m. June 4-6 on Sandburg’s Main Campus in Galesburg. Open to students who have completed grades 1-6. Led by Chargers coach Rodney Blue. Camp cost is $40 and includes a T-shirt. Registration deadline is noon May 23. Rain location is John M. Lewis Gymnasium on Sandburg’s Main Campus.

BASEBALL

Practice hitting, pitching and fielding while also focusing on offensive and defensive strategies. Camp takes place June 11-14 at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex on Sandburg’s Main Campus in Galesburg. Open to students who have completed grades 1-12. Times are 9 a.m.-noon for grades 1-6 and 1-4 p.m. for grades 7-12. Led by Chargers coach Jake Tenhouse. Registration deadline is noon May 30. Cost is $50 and includes a T-shirt. Rain location is John M. Lewis Gymnasium on Sandburg’s Main Campus. Rain date is June 15.

BASKETBALL

Practice fundamentals and focus on teamwork. One-on-one through 5-on-5 concepts will be discussed and taught. Camp takes place 9 a.m.-noon June 18-21 at Sandburg’s John M. Lewis Gymnasium. Open to students who have completed grades 4-9. Led by Chargers women’s basketball coach Mike Bailey. Registration deadline is noon June 7. Cost is $50 and includes a T-shirt.

VOLLEYBALL

Practice passing, setting and hitting, with a focus on offensive and defensive strategies. Camp takes place June 25-27 at Sandburg’s John M. Lewis Gymnasium. Open to students who have completed grades 4-12. Times are 10 a.m.-noon for grades 4-7 and 1-3 p.m. for grades 8-12. Led by Chargers coach Todd Winkler. Registration deadline is noon June 14. Cost is $40 and includes a T-shirt.
