The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team closed its regular season in emphatic fashion, blasting Kishwaukee 64-31 on Thursday during Sophomore Night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

Sandburg (13-14 overall, 6-4 Arrowhead Conference) never trailed and saw all 11 players score — with 10 recording at least one field goal — en route to clinching a third-place finish in Arrowhead play.

Sandburg opened the game on a 19-2 burst and led 21-4 after the first quarter. Kishwaukee went 1 for 10 from the floor in the opening period and went without a field goal for the first 9:47 of the contest.

Sandburg forced 18 turnovers in taking a 33-8 halftime lead, holding to Kougars to 3-of-25 shooting (0 for 8 from 3-point range) in the first half. Eight players, including all six sophomores (Morgan Kirby, Madison Lowe, Juliette Camara, Alivia Cummings, Abby Masterson and Willow Porter), recorded a field goal for the Chargers in the first half.

Lowe notched her second double-double of the season by picking up game highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds, with five board coming on the offensive end. Porter added 10 points for Sandburg, and Camara dished out a career-best five assists for the Chargers.

“We came out focused and took care of business the way we wanted to tonight,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “It was just the kind of Sophomore Night you always hope to have. Hopefully we can keep it up in the postseason.”

Aneysia Schrader scored 11 points to be the only Kishwaukee (5-22, 0-10) player to reach double figures.

The Chargers will open Region IV tournament play with a quarterfinal contest Tuesday, with the opponent and location yet to be announced.
