Chargers Split Season Opener at Quincy JV

The Carl Sandburg College baseball team split a season-opening doubleheader Sunday at Quincy JV, winning the first game 9-1 and dropping the nightcap 6-3.

Key Moment
The Chargers struck for four runs in the first inning, getting a two-run double from freshman Tyler Womack (Moline, Ill./Moline) to open the scoring and a two-run home run from freshman Antonio Dominguez (Rock Island, Ill./United Township).

Right-hander Mitch Smith (Moline, Ill./Sherrard) was stellar in his Chargers debut, throwing six innings of shutout ball to earn the victory. He allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out four.

The Hawks broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth, scoring the go-ahead run on a passed ball with two out. Quincy JV added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to win despite picking up just three hits in the contest.

Kevin Ulrich (Benson, Ill./Roanoke-Benson) delivered a two-run single in the first for a 3-0 Chargers lead and drew walks in his other two plate appearances.
