Carl Sandburg College student and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member  Zana Danner of Davenport, Iowa, has been awarded a $1,500 scholarship as a 2019 Coca-Cola Academic Team Gold Scholar.

Danner was one of 150 PTK members to be named to the Coca-Cola Academic Team. The program recognizes 50 Gold, 50 Silver and 50 Bronze Scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each scholar also receives a commemorative medallion.

Students are nominated for the academic team by their college administrators. Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership and engagement in college and community service. Danner is the vice president of Sandburg’s PTK chapter and was elected president of the Student Government Association for 2018-19. She also is on the Leadership Council of TRIO Student Support Services, serves as a tutor and is a member of Women of Character, a campus service organization.

This is not the first award Danner has received during the current academic year. Last fall she became the first Sandburg student to be named a Student Laureate of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. The honor is given to an outstanding senior from each four-year college or university in the state as well as a single representative of all Illinois community colleges.

Danner and other Coca-Cola Academic Team members will be recognized during Phi Theta Kappa’s annual convention April 4-6 in Orlando, Fla.

Headquartered in Jackson, Miss., Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of community college students and helping them grow as scholars and leaders. PTK has more than 3.5 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in 10 nations. For more information about PTK, visit
