Students not only competed for a team title, but also for the chance to receive a talent grant from Carl Sandburg College. Each high school who enters a team of at least six students received a talent grant for the next academic year which is a full-tuition scholarship for a full-time student (enrolled in 12-18 credit hours) at Sandburg. This scholarship can also be applied to dual-credit class tuition while still in high school in which the remainder of the grant can be applied if the student enrolls full-time and maintains a 2.75 GPA. In this situation, the grant may be renewed for one more succeeding academic year. Additionally, each school received three talent grants (equivalent to full tuition for 12-18 credit hours) for subject winners in math, chemistry and English on an open-basis competition.
Carl Sandburg College (5-16, 2-4) women’s basketball went on the road to Kishwaukee College Thursday night and were defeated by a score of 76-29. Makenzie Frank and Diamond Burt led Sandburg with 8 points each. Memphis bound Devin Mack led Kishwaukee with 19. CSC trailed 36-17 at the half.

CSC hosts Highland next Tuesday night with tip set for 5:30pm.

CSC Coach Mike Bailey-“We struggled right out of the gate offensively, scoring just 4 points the first 11 minutes and the game got away from us. Everybody got equal playing time but the only one to play well at all was Makenzie Frank. She is starting to put together some positive minutes for us night in and night out.”
CSC men put away the Braves for their first conference win.

In the men's game, the Chargers broke from the gate quickly led by Galesburg freshman Chad Thompson who scored seven of the first nine points for a 9-4 advantage. He finished the night with 18 which included five treys. He shared scoring honors with freshman Spencer Pratt (Olympia HS). Pratt, at 6-3, was a demon on the boards. With the Chargers at a big size disadvantage, Pratt and the rest of the Chargers went hard to the glass. Said Chargers Coach Ryan Twaddle, "I've never seen a player work as hard as he (Pratt) does. He always seems to be around the ball."
The Chargers gradually pulled away late in the first half to lead by twelve, 37-25 at the break. In the first five minutes of the second half, Sandburg built a 15 point lead lead by Pratt and Thompson. It was still a 15 point lead with five minutes to play when the Braves rallied. They managed to cut the lead in half, but the Chargers scored some easy baskets against the Braves pressure to hold them off.
Coach Twaddle was beaming after the game. "We played hard and shared the ball incredibly well on offense. We were making the right decisions at the right time which led to good shots. " He went on to say, "We challenged them to play hard for a full 40 minutes and they did."
The Chargers finished with ten treys in the game. "The three's were the direct result of making those right decisions with the ball." said Twaddle.
The leading scorer for the Braves was a 6-8 freshman from Davenport West, Cody Cooley, who netted 16.

The Sandburg women got the evening going with a 62-53 win over Black Hawk (11-10/2-4) to run their record to 2 and 3 in the Arrowhead Conference and 5 and 15 on the season. In the opener, Coach Mike Bailey saw his women's team finally finish a game. "We've been close a lot this season,"said Bailey, "but haven't been able to finish off an opponent. Tonight we did."
It didn't look good early on for the Chargers as the Braves got out of the gate quickly to lead 10 to 1. Despite their slow start and some poor free throw shooting, the Chargers were able to claw their way into a 25-23 lead at intermission. At the start of the second half, Black Hawk was held to just one field goal for the first five minutes. CSC managed to extend its lead to seven and then to eight with eight minutes gone when sophomore Courtney McKown (North Fulton HS) nailed back to back treys for a 38-30 advantage.
Black Hawk wouldn't go away, even after the Chargers had built a 15 point lead. The Braves cut the margin to six with a 9-0 run inside of three minutes but the Chargers finished big time hitting nine of ten charity shots in the final two plus minutes to seal the victory.
A former Silver Streak playing for Black Hawk took game scoring honors. Freshman Jamie Johnson finished with 16 points including a pair of three's in the Braves final rush. The only other Black Hawk player in double figures was sophomore Christa Oldham from Davenport Central who chipped in with 12.
The Chargers had a balanced attack with eight of the ten players who got into the action getting in the scorebook. They were led by Freshman Makenzie Frank (Knoxville HS) who led the way with 13. She hit a pair of three's and was 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Diamond Burt (Rich East HS) added 12 and freshman Kate Morrissey (Stark County HS) chipped in with 10.

Sandburg Baseball Signs Six Players

GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College is pleased to announce the signing of six student-athletes to play baseball for the Chargers during the 2012-2013 season. Listed are the following six players:

•	Tim Rossell, Galesburg, Galesburg High School
•	Brad Moody, Chatsworth, Prairie Central High School
•	Josh Wade, St. Louis, Mo., Francis Howell Central High School
•	Lucas Giertz, Biggsville, Burlington, Iowa, Notre Dame High School
•	Jesse Schott, Cape Girardeau, Mo., Cape Girardeau Notre Dame High School
•	Brendan Butrimas, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Phillip Pocock High School

“I am very happy to land these six young men on the first day that we can sign players for 2012-2013 season,” said T.J. Lindburg, head coach of the Sandburg baseball team. “We are filling many needs with this group of players. Three of the guys have a good shot of helping us right away, both as everyday players as well as on the mound. We picked up a few guys who really have a chance to be special pitchers at the college level.

“We also are filling some needs in the field and at the plate. All of these guys are coming to us from winning programs as well, which is very important to me. We are excited about the future of our program by adding this group to a strong freshmen class that is in place for the upcoming spring season.”

Rossell is a 6-foot 180-pound right hand pitcher. “I have been watching Tim pitch for a few years now and he is exactly the kind of pitcher that I want in our program,” said Lindburg. “He is the true meaning of a pitcher. He knows how to win and how to really pitch, not just throw. His velocity jumped over the summer last year into the mid 80’s topping 87 at times. He can locate the good fastball all over the strike zone. His best asset is his ability to throw any of his pitches for strikes at any time in the count. He has great breaking stuff and a change-up. He is very polished for a high school pitcher and he is going to have a very good college career at CSC and beyond. It is also nice having Tim come from Galesburg High School and Legion Post 285 as both teams have had great success over the past seasons.”

Brad Moody is a 6-foot 180-pound right hand pitcher and utility player. “Brad has a live arm and is very athletic,” said Lindburg. “His best days are ahead of him for sure. On the mound he is guy who throws in the low-mid 80’s now with room to grow because of his athletic ability. He also has a feel for his curveball and change-up, and I believe both pitches will improve during the fall. Brad also has very quick hands at the plate and can play all over the field because of his athletic ability.”

Josh Wade is a 6-foot 175-pound outfielder. “I believe Josh will have a great college career at CSC and beyond,” said Lindburg. “He is coming from a high school that competes against some of the best in the Midwest. He is a rare find as being a polished switch hitter. His swing is very good from both sides of plate. Josh is also a tremendous athlete that can run, field, and throw the ball very well from the OF. I believe with playing baseball year round he can really take off and the sky is the limit.”

Lucas Giertz is a 5-foot-9 175-pound right hand pitcher and utility player. “Lucas will play a huge part for us,” said Lindburg. “He is a great athlete who stars in three sports at Burlington Notre Dame. He is guy who can play behind the dish, or almost anywhere else on the field. I am not sure yet what position will be his best, but that is a very good problem to have. On top of that he has a short compact swing and approach at the plate, which will translate well at the college level. Once he gets on base he can make things happen. Lucas also will pitch for us. He has a live arm with a good feel for his off-speed stuff.”

Jesse Schott is a 5-foot-9 185-pound right hand pitcher and utility player. “Jesse is very strong/athletic young man that comes from perennial powerhouse in high school baseball,” said Lindburg. “He is very polished at the plate with some power potential. The ball really jumps off his bat. He consistently hits the ball off the barrel and his approach at the plate will translate well at our level. Jesse is another guy who will help us on the mound as well. He has a low 80’s fastball and can locate it well with solid rhythm and mechanics. His best pitch is his slider, which is hard with late break. He also possesses a pretty good split finger as another out pitch.”

Brendan Butrimas is a 6-foot-4 215-pound right hand pitcher. “Brendan has a very high upside on the mound,” said Lindburg. “He is still very young and already has an MLB body. His arm action is very loose and the ball comes out of his hand great. With his body and the loose arm he could explode onto the college baseball scene and possibly beyond. He can run the ball up there in the mid 80’s at times while being 16-17 years old. I would not be surprised at all to see him in the upper 80’s-low 90’s within the next few years. Brendan comes from the Oakville Royals baseball program. We have 3 soph. playing for us right now from the Royals that we have enjoyed very much.”

Carl Sandburg College (4-15, 1-3) traveled to Illinois Valley (16-4, 5-0) Thursday night and dropped a 57-46 contest in Arrowhead Conference women’s basketball. The game was tied 26 all at the half. Meredith Beoletto led the Chargers with 12 points and Diamond Burt reached double figures with 10. Alycia Welch led IVCC with 14. Sandburg managed to make just 2 three point baskets on the night and were 12-22 from the FT line.

CSC hosts Black Hawk College next Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 5:30pm.

CSC Coach Mike Bailey-“Played a very solid game until last 3 minutes. Down 4 on the road against #1 team in the region and we get back to back stops and miss a breakaway layup and the front end of a one and one in our two possessions. Really took the wind out of us at that point. Story of our season but these kids refuse to give up on each other and played hard for 40 minutes tonight.”
“I want people, especially students, to get an opportunity to see what instructors do outside of the classroom,” said Lisa Mohr, instructor and coordinator of the art program. “Students think of us as teachers, but we are also working artists. I would also like for the community to come out and see the talent we have here.”

It was another meltdown and another loss for the Carl Sandburg College women's basketball team Monday evening at the John Lewis Gym as the Monmouth JV's came from twenty points down in the second half to pull out a 57-55 victory. The loss dropped the Charger women to 4 and 14 on the year.
The problem for the Chargers was more of the same. They were unable to finish off a game in which they held a commanding lead. In the first half the Chargers gradually opened a 35-21 lead at the break. In the second half over the first nine minutes they increased the margin to 20 points at 50-30 when the wheels came off.
Sandburg scored only five points the rest of the way while the Lady Scots caught fire. Assistant Coach Katie King, subbing for Head Coach Mike Bailey who was out ill, said, "They started to hit their shots, got momentum and we broke down."
The fact that Sandburg was just 1 of 8 from the free throw line including missing the front end of three one and ones just added to their problems. Said King, "When you shoot 1 of 8 from the free throw line, it's very hard to win close games. We had plenty of chances to pull out the win but couldn't convert."
The Lady Scots finally tied it at 53-all when Jasmine Johnson canned a field goal with just over three minutes to play. Johnson lead all scorers in the game with 16 points and was the only Monmouth player in double figures. Sandburg's Diamond Burt gave the Chargers the lead at 55-53 with a driving layup but Monmouth's Johnson countered with another hoop to tie it at 55-all.
In the space of the next minute and a half, the Chargers missed two layups and a pair of free throws. Then with 23 seconds to play CSC missed another shot and committed a foul on the rebound. Monmouth's Tiffany Churchill (South Fulton HS) made one of two for a 56-55 lead. The Chargers then missed two more point blank shots and fouled again with the Lady Scots Chelsea Gross (LaMoille HS) converting one of two to make it 57-55 with 11 seconds to play.
After a time out, the Chargers put the ball into the hands of their returning All-Region Four player, Diamond Burt who drove to the basket drew contact but no call as the shot bounded off the rim. Meredith Beoletto (North Fulton HS) lead the Chargers with 12 points while Megan Blumenshein ( Orion HS) added 11. The game was decided at the free throw line with Monmouth canning 14 of 24 while the Chargers were 3 of 12.
