Sandburg Men’s Golf Starts Fall Season Thursday at Home

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team heads into the 2021-22 season looking to extend its streak of competing on the national stage to a perfect 10. The Chargers have qualified as a team or advanced an individual to the NJCAA Division II Championship nine years in a row and 13 times in the last 14 seasons.

The Chargers open their fall schedule by hosting the Sandburg Invite on Thursday and Friday. The first round will take place at Lake Bracken Country Club in Galesburg, while Friday’s action will be at Oak Run in Dahinda.

NOTABLE RETURNER
Cole Hopping (Vermont, Ill./VIT), sophomore
• Qualified for nationals as a freshman last season, finishing tied for 71st
• Earned a spot on the All-Arrowhead Conference team last spring, tying for sixth overall
• Co-medalist in Arrowhead meet hosted by Sandburg during spring season, carding a 3-over-par 74

NEWCOMERS TO WATCH
• Clayton Phillips (New London, Iowa/New London), freshman
• Cooper Theleritis (Pekin, Ill./Pekin), freshman

TOURNAMENT TO WATCH
Region IV Tournament from Oct. 7-9 at PrairieView in Byron, which serves as the Chargers’ national qualifier.

Sandburg’s roster includes a pair of brothers from Williamsfield. Calvin Peterson is a sophomore with the Chargers, and his younger brother Lorin is a freshman with Sandburg this season.
