PEORIA — Carl Sandburg College men’s cross country freshman Josphat Langat (Kenya/Alliance) set an 8-kilometer school record Friday at the Bradley Intercollegiate at Detweiller Park.
Langat’s time of 25 minutes, 49.0 seconds broke the mark set just a week earlier by teammate Calton Kibet (Kenya/Poiywek Secondary) with a 26:45.2 at the Fighting Bee Invitational. Prior to this season, the Sandburg school record was 27:03, set by Wesley Brandenburg at the 2006 NJCAA national meet.
Langat’s time Friday was good for 11th place in a field largely made up of NCAA Division I teams and other four-year schools. The Chargers placed fifth as a team with 121 points, finishing ahead of Division I Western Illinois, Division III Monmouth and Division II McKendree.
Emmanuel Kiprop (Kenya/Kericho TEA Boys’ Secondary) and Kibet also posted times Friday that would have broken the existing school record. Kiprop placed 17th in 26:10.9, and Kibet was 25th in 26:43.4.
Bradley had the top seven overall finishers to claim the team title. The Braves’ George Watson won in 24:25.9.
WOMEN’S RACE
Barbra Jepkirui’s (Kenya/St. Teresa Girls’ Secondary) led the Chargers in the 3-mile women’s race, taking 42nd in 20:46.3. Mary Njuguna (Kenya/Turbo Girls Secondary) was 52nd for Sandburg with a time of 21:38.3.
The Chargers took ninth as a team with 257 points. Wisconsin swept the team title with 15 points and was led by Lucinda Crouch’s winning time of 16:21.5.
