GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team won the first two sets in close fashion and went on to sweep Black Hawk 26-24, 27-25, 25-12 in an Arrowhead Conference match Tuesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
The Chargers (10-7, 2-1) saved a set point in each of the first two sets. Down 24-23 in the first, Sandburg won the final three points behind kills from Lauren Erke (Quincy, Ill./Quincy) and Megan Crome (Marshall, Ill./Marshall) before a Braves (13-9, 1-2) hitting error.
The Chargers trailed by as many as seven points in the second on three occasions — the last at 18-11 — before storming back. Gracie Rademacker (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) had a kill and an ace during a 5-0 run that pulled Sandburg within 18-16, and Carley Reeves-Eakins (Branson, Mo./Reeds Spring) had two kills and a block during a four-point run that tied the set at 22.
Black Hawk had set point at 24-23, but the Chargers won four of the next five points, getting kills from Rademacker, setter Carmyn Baldwin (Lewistown, Ill./Lewistown) and Erke. Baldwin’s kill at 25-all came on a bump to the baseline after Rademacker had an attack blocked back into her and Crome helped dig it up.
Sandburg had just six hitting errors on the night and hit .308 for the match, with Reeves-Eakins (11) and Erke (10) each putting up double-digit kills. Rademacker added eight kills.
Baldwin had a double-double with 32 kills and 12 assists. The Chargers also got double-digit digs from libero Jasmin McDaniel (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) with 20 and 10 each from Rademacker and Mackenzie Springsteen (Sperry, Iowa/Mediapolis).
