MALTA — Josphat Langat (Kenya/Alliance) broke his own 8-kilometer school record and Barbra Jepkirui (Kenya/St. Teresa Girls’ Secondary) dominated the women’s race to highlight an impressive showing for the Carl Sandburg College cross country teams at the Pre-Region Showdown on Saturday at Kishwaukee.
Langat’s winning time of 25:18 shattered the record of 25:49.0 he set earlier this season at the Bradley Intercollegiate. It marked the third time the Chargers’ 8K record has been broken this year. Previously, Calton Kibet (Kenya/Poiywek Secondary) had a record time of 26:45.2 at the St. Ambrose Fighting Bee Invitational.
Kibet finished second Saturday with a time of 25:20 as the Chargers posted a perfect score of 15 points. Emmanuel Kiprop (Kenya/Kericho TEA Boys’ Secondary) was third in 25:21, Nicholas Janson (Cambridge, Ill./Cambridge) was fourth in 28:19 and Nicholas Seaver (Industry, Ill./Rushville-Industry) was sixth overall — fifth among team runners — with a time of 28:26.
In the 5K women’s race, Jepkirui earned her second straight race victory with a time of 15:48, finishing 41 seconds ahead of runner-up Elly Kuhn of Waubonsee. Mary Njuguna (Kenya/Turbo Girls Secondary) was third for Sandburg in 16:29.
Also posting top-10 times for the Chargers were Kelynn Boyle (Amboy, Ill./Amboy) in seventh in 18:24 and Lily Sharum (Trivoli, Ill./Farmington) in ninth at 18:32.
Sandburg won the event with 30 points, finishing ahead of Waubonsee (43) and Sauk Valley (49).
