Sandburg Men’s XC 7th, Women 22nd in USTFCCCA Rankings

GALESBURG — Both Carl Sandburg College cross country teams moved down one spot in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NJCAA Division II polls released this week.

The Chargers men’s team, coming off its first-ever region title at last weekend’s Region IV Championships, went to No. 7 in the fifth rankings of the season, while the Region IV runner-up women’s team moved to No. 22. It marked the fourth straight time both squads have appeared in the national rankings.

In addition to winning the region championship, the men’s team also boasted the individual Region IV champion in Calton Kibet (Kenya/Poiywek Secondary), who finished in an 8-kilometer school-record time of 24 minutes, 51 seconds. It marked the fourth time Sandburg’s 8K record has fallen this season.

Sandburg had four other men’s runners who earned all-region honors for finishing in the top 15. Emmanuel Kiprop (Kenya/Kericho TEA Boys’ Secondary) was second, Josphat Langat (Kenya/Alliance) third, Nicholas Janson (Cambridge, Ill./Cambridge) sixth and Brian Kipchemis (Kenya/Segero Adventist) ninth.

The Chargers women’s team missed winning the Region IV title by only a point but had four runners on the all-region team: Barbra Jepkirui (Kenya/St. Teresa Girls’ Secondary) in third place, Mary Njuguna (Kenya/Turbo Girls Secondary) in fifth, Faith Kiprop (Kenya/ AIC Kessup Girls) in 13th  and Kelynn Boyle (Amboy, Ill./Amboy) in 14th
