GALESBURG — Sandburg students won two state championships and four medals overall at the SkillsUSA Illinois Championships, which took place April 24-26 in Peoria.
Eleazer Zuniga won gold for job interview, and Draven Leady took first place in welding sculpture. As state champions, Zuniga and Leady qualified to compete at the SkillsUSA Championships from June 23-27 in Atlanta.
Faith Kiprop (medical terminology) and Kenny Mensah (computer programming) brought home silver medals for their second-place finishes at the state competition.
More than 2,000 students from 80 schools took part in the state championship event, which featured competitions in over 140 trade, technical and leadership fields.
More than 6,500 state champions are expected to compete at the SkillsUSA Championships. SkillsUSA serves students at the college, high school and middle school level who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled-service occupations and for further education.
