Nineteenth-ranked Southeastern (Iowa) limited the Carl Sandburg College baseball team to two hits in handing the Chargers an 11-1 loss in eight innings Tuesday afternoon at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
The Blackhawks opened the game with a first-pitch home run by Chase Wood, and they extended their lead to 9-0 with a six-run sixth inning.
The Chargers (11-9) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Marty Mennenga (Rantoul, Ill./Paxton-Buckley-Loda) led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Payton Hartbank’s (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon) sacrifice fly.
Sandburg starter Travis Ausbury took the loss despite allowing just three hits over five innings. He fanned two and issued five walks.
Southeastern’s Jacob Curry tossed six innings of two-hit ball in earning the victory. He struck out five and walked three. Duane Cyr and Sam Powell each followed with a hitless inning in relief for the Blackhawks.
