Highland handed the Carl Sandburg College baseball team its first Arrowhead Conference losses of the season, shutting out the Chargers 3-0 in Game 1 and rallying for a 6-5 walk-off victory in Game 2 of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
The Chargers (16-12, 4-2) were blanked on three hits and two walks in the opener, spoiling a strong outing from Sandburg starter Travis Ausbury (Macomb, Ill./Macomb). The freshman right-hander surrendered three runs (two earned) on five hits and five walks while striking out three over six innings.
Shane Coleman (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) doubled in the fourth for the Chargers’ lone extra-base hit in Game 1.
The Cougars jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added another run in the third.
Angel Figueroa’s (East Chicago, Ind./Bishop Noll) RBI double in the sixth of Game 2 gave the Chargers a 5-4 lead, but Highland scored twice in the seventh to finish off the sweep. The Cougars loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh, and, after a fielder’s choice at the plate, got back-to-back base hits to complete the rally.
Sandburg couldn’t hang on after taking leads of 3-0 after the second, 3-2 after the fourth and 5-4 after the sixth. Jordan Chandler (Erie, Ill./Erie) went 2 for 2 with a walk and three runs scored to lead the Chargers at the plate.
Sandburg will step out of conference play Thursday by hosting South Suburban at 3 p.m. before traveling to face Illinois Valley in an Arrowhead doubleheader at noon Saturday.
