Alec Drake (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) fired a one-hitter in Game 1 to highlight the Carl Sandburg College baseball team’s Arrowhead Conference doubleheader split at Illinois Valley on Saturday. Drake’s start helped the Chargers to a 17-0 five-inning blowout before dropping Game 2 6-4.

Drake struck out five on the day, with his only hit allowed being a one-out single in the third. The sophomore left-hander walked two and hit a batter but allowed only one runner to reach third in throwing his first career shutout. In two outings against the Eagles this season, Drake has thrown nine shutout innings, struck out 11 and given up just two hits.

The Chargers (18-14, 5-3) offense, meanwhile, erupted for 17 hits, with six going for extra bases. Every starter in the Sandburg lineup had at least one hit, and eight batters drove in at least one run.

Payton Hartbank (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon) finished 2 for 5 with two runs scored and five driven in. Blake Russell (Joy, Ill./Mercer County) had two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs. Shane Coleman (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) and Angel Figueroa (East Chicago, Ind./Bishop Noll) each had three hits, and Jordan Chandler (Erie, Ill./Erie) smacked a solo homer, his team-leading fifth of the year.

The Eagles bounced back to take Game 2, with all the scoring taking place in the first three innings. Levi Brening (Coon Rapids, Minn./DuQuoin) cracked a three-run homer in the third to tie it at 4, but IVCC scored two in the bottom half to regain the lead.

Brening finished the contest 3 for 3 with two steals and drove in all four Sandburg runs. He reached base in all seven of his plate appearances on the afternoon, going 4 for 4 with two walks, a hit-by-pitch, five runs scored and five driven in.

The Chargers and Eagles will play the second half of their home-and-home series at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
