Sophomore Kelsie French (Camanche, Iowa/Camanche) struck out a career-high nine batters and drove in a pair of runs in Game 2, but the Carl Sandburg College softball team was swept by Lincoln 11-2 and 4-2 in nonconference action Wednesday afternoon at the Wililam “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
French’s nine Ks surpassed her previous best of seven on April 1 at Black Hawk, but the Lynx scored single tallies against her in the fifth and sixth innings to break a 2-2 tie.
The Chargers (6-26) collected nine hits in the nightcap, one from each batter in the lineup. Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, French knocked a single to left that scored Adre Vetter (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) from third and Trinity Martin (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) all the way from first to even the score.
Sandburg trailed 3-1 after four innings in the opener, but Lincoln erupted for eight runs over the final three frames.
Vetter delivered a two-out RBI single in the sixth, and Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) went 2 for 4, including a first-inning leadoff triple, to lead the Chargers at the dish.
The Chargers will play the second of three straight home doubleheaders when they host Illinois Valley in Arrowhead Conference play at 3 p.m. Thursday.
