The team from the Galesburg Area Vocational Center took home first place and boasted the individual winner in the Carl Sandburg College High School Welding Competition on Friday at the College’s Main Campus in Galesburg.

The GAVC team of Angus Carlson, Dewey Holden, Matthew Coziahr and Sean Peterson took first place with 213 points, ahead of runner-up Knoxville (198) and third-place finisher ROWVA (184) in the eight-school competition. United, Hamilton, West Prairie and Cuba rounded out the team standings. Spoon River Valley had two students compete as individuals.

Carlson, who attends ROWVA, had the top individual score, and Holden, another GAVC student from ROWVA, finished second. Coziahr had the highest score on the written portion of the competition, and Hamilton’s Michael Hoffman was the top scorer in the virtual welding competition provided by Lincoln Electric and S.J. Smith.

Teams of four were tested on blueprint reading, shielded metal arc welding and oxy-fuel cutting in the shop in addition to taking a 50-question test. Competitors received a drawing, coupons, welding supplies and access to welding/cutting equipment in each practical skill area and had 30 minutes to complete each station. Work at each station was judged on dimensional accuracy, conformity to the drawing requirement and visual examination of the welds and torch work.

S.J. Smith Co.; Illowa Sheet Metal Workers Local 91; Schwarz Bros. Manufacturing; Praxair; Illinois Manufacturers’ Association; Airgas; Midstate Manufacturing; Torch & Hammer Fabrication; Lincoln Electric; and the Sandburg Welding Club sponsored the competition.
