The Carl Sandburg College baseball team split a pair of slugfests with Waubonsee on Monday afternoon at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. The Chargers won Game 1 17-14 but dropped the finale 15-8 with the wind gusting to left field throughout the day.

Sandburg (23-16) collected just eight hits in the opener but took advantage of four Waubonsee errors and 12 walks handed out by Chiefs pitchers. Marty Mennenga (Rantoul, Ill./Paxton-Buckley-Loda) drilled a second-inning grand slam for a 5-1 Chargers lead, and Sandburg held on after a 10-run fifth put it up 17-9.

Mennenga finished with five RBIs and three runs scored out of the leadoff spot, and Shane Coleman (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) went 2 for 4 with a homer, two runs scored and four driven in. Angel Figueroa (East Chicago, Ind./Bishop Noll) and Blake Russell (Joy, Ill./Mercer County) each knocked in a pair of runs.

Freshman left-hander Jack Gray (Burlington, Iowa/Notre Dame) earned his first victory in exchange for four outs in relief of starter Brenton Stropes (Aledo, Ill./Mercer County). Cody Marquith struck out two and didn’t allow a hit in recording the final five outs for his second save in as many appearances.

A five-run fifth in Game 2 helped Waubonsee open up a 9-3 lead. The Chargers cut their deficit to 10-8 after the sixth, but the Chiefs added another five-run frame in the seventh. Nolan Ard (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) and Levi Brening (Coon Rapids, Minn./DuQuoin) each went 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs, and Figueroa and Jordan Chandler (Erie, Ill./Erie) each had two hits in four at-bats.

The Chargers are in action again at 2 p.m. Tuesday with a key Arrowhead Conference doubleheader at Sauk Valley.
