A tough day in the field resulted in a pair of five-inning losses for the Carl Sandburg College softball team Friday afternoon against Waubonsee at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. The Chargers committed 14 errors on the day — including 11 in Game 1 — in losing 15-3 and 14-3.
Trinity Martin (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) had a perfect day at the plate to lead Sandburg (6-30) offensively. The sophomore delivered a two-run pinch-hit triple in the fifth inning of Game 1 and went 2 for 2 with a walk and a run scored in Game 2. Leadoff batter Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) scored three of the Chargers’ six runs on the day.
Waubonsee pounced early and often in Game 1, leading 4-1 after the first and adding one run in the second, eight in the third and two in the fourth.
Sandburg’s only lead of the afternoon came on Chelsea Lesniewski’s (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) RBI double in the first inning of Game 2. The Chiefs, though, struck for five runs in the second and never looked back. The Chargers’ only other tallies in the contest came on a two-run single in the fifth from Chloe Sullivan (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale).
Sandburg’s next action is an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader at noon Sunday at Sauk Valley.
