The Carl Sandburg College softball team rebounded from a 10-3 loss in Game 1 with a 6-4 victory in the nightcap to split an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader with Kishwaukee on Wednesday afternoon at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.

Zoe Wetherell (Washington, Ill./Washington) and Emily Ziegler (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) each drove in two runs in Game 2 for the Chargers (5-21, 3-5), who scored in five of six innings.

Tied 2-2 in the fourth, Adre Vetter (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) singled to center, scoring Abbey French (Alexis, Ill./United) from second. After a fielder’s choice, Ziegler doubled to left to extend the Chargers’ lead to 4-2.

Kelsie French (Camanche, Iowa/Camanche) went the distance in the circle for Sandburg to run her record to 3-1 in conference play. The sophomore right-hander allowed two earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three.

Sandburg stole six bases in Game 2, with half of those coming from Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin), who singled twice. The Chargers also got two base hits from Vetter.

Kishwaukee extended a 5-3 lead in Game 1 with a two-run sixth and three more runs in the seventh. Each of the first seven hitters in the Sandburg lineup had one hit, but its only extra-base hit came on Mayberry’s fifth-inning triple. Mayberry also scored two of the Chargers’ three runs in the opener.

Sandburg travels to face Sauk Valley at 3 p.m. Thursday in another Arrowhead doubleheader.
