Zoe Wetherell (Washington, Ill./Washington) had a huge day at the plate, but the Carl Sandburg College softball team dropped both ends of an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader, including a marathon Game 1, against Illinois Valley on Thursday afternoon at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
The Eagles took the opener 7-5 in 11 innings and finished off the sweep with a 7-3 defeat of the Chargers (6-28) in Game 2.
Wetherell homered in both games for Sandburg, collected six hits — including a 4-for-4 effort with a walk in Game 1 — scored three times and drove in three.
With the Chargers down 5-4 in the sixth in the opener, Wetherell smashed a homer to center to tie the game. It stayed that way until the 11th, with IVCC scoring on the strength of three hits and a passed ball.
The Eagles never trailed in Game 2 after scoring three times in the first and extending their lead to 6-1 after the fourth. Wetherell added two more hits, including a solo homer to lead off the seventh. Leadoff hitter Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) also had two hits for the Chargers, and Chloe Sullivan (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale) and Abbey French (Alexis, Ill./United) each drove in a run.
The Chargers will wrap up a string of three home contests in as many days when they host Waubonsee at 3 p.m. Friday.
