Zoe Wetherell (Washington, Ill./Washington) continued her recent hot streak, but the Carl Sandburg College softball team dropped a pair of one-run games Tuesday at Kishwaukee, falling 3-2 and 4-3 in Arrowhead Conference action
Wetherell finished the day 5 for 6 with a double and home run for the Chargers (7-33, 4-10), but Sandburg got just six hits from the rest of its lineup for the day. Over her last seven games, Wetherell has batted .583 (14 for 24) with two doubles, four homers, eight RBIs and seven runs scored.
The Kougars did all their scoring in one inning in both contests. Kishwaukee held on in Game 1 after taking a 3-1 lead in the third. Wetherell led off the fourth with a double and scored on Abbey French’s (Alexis, Ill./United) two batters later to make it 3-2, but the Chargers couldn’t find a way to tie it up.
Becca Tharp (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs on six hits and three walks over six innings.
Kishwaukee scored all four of its runs in Game 2 in the third inning for a 4-1 lead. Wetherell smacked a solo homer in the fourth to make it 4-2. Chelsea Lesniewski (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) made it 4-3 in the sixth when she led off with a double, moved up on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Chloe Sullivan (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale). The Chargers, though, went hitless the rest of the way.
The Chargers doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday at Spoon River has been canceled and won’t be rescheduled. Sandburg’s next scheduled action is 3 p.m. Thursday at home against Sauk Valley.
