Stone Named Carl Sandburg College Faculty Member of the Year

Christina Stone has been named the 2017 Carl Sandburg College Faculty Member of the Year after students and fellow faculty members nominated Stone for her outstanding work in the classroom. Stone was introduced as the winner during the 49th annual Carl Sandburg College Commencement on Thursday night at Galesburg High School.
A nursing instructor, Stone graduated from Sandburg’s associate degree nursing program in 2004. She worked as a registered nurse at a local hospital while earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from the University of Phoenix before returning to Sandburg as an instructor in 2009.
“I channeled my nursing faculty mentors to become the teacher I am today,” Stone said. “I enjoy assisting students in their success and guiding them toward their educational and career goals.”
In addition to her teaching duties, Stone is chair of the College of Nursing’s Admission and Retention Committee, co-chair of the Curriculum Committee and serves on the Evaluation Committee. She also is an elected member of the College’s Tenure Committee. Stone helped develop flipped classrooms in the College of Nursing and has worked with a fellow faculty member to give college in-service workshops on using the app Explain Everything.
She has attended several national conferences and workshops, and in 2015 she received the College of Nursing’s Daisy Faculty Award, which recognizes faculty for their commitment and inspirational influence on their students.
By being selected as Sandburg’s Faculty Member of the Year, Stone has been nominated for the Illinois Community College Trustees Association Outstanding Faculty Member Award.
“She is a student advocate and is passionate about being in the classroom teaching,” one student wrote in their nomination of Stone.
“She will take the time to talk to each one of her students to help them deal with the stress and anxiety that is involved with the nursing program,” another student wrote. “She has made me a better student because she believes in me, which makes me believe in myself.”
