The Carl Sandburg College TRIO Upward Bound program has been awarded a new five-year grant cycle that runs through August 2022.

“Having the TRIO Upward Bound program funded for another grant cycle is a great accomplishment for Carl Sandburg College and the community,” said Tony Bentley, director of TRIO Upward Bound at Sandburg. “The success of our program is directly connected to the support we receive not only from Sandburg but from our partner schools, students and their families. We’re looking forward to serving students in our area for another five-year period and in helping them reach their educational goal of obtaining a college degree.”

As part of the grant, TRIO Upward Bound will work toward achieving objectives as it works to increase student success. All TRIO Upward Bound programs nationwide share six objectives they work toward, but each program, based on target area and population research, establishes its own objective percentages in which it must strive to achieve. The Sandburg TRIO Upward Bound objectives focus on retention of program students, improvement in participant grade point averages, high school graduation, participant performance on state assessments, participant enrollment in college and participants’ success in obtaining a two- or four-year college degree.

One hundred percent of high school seniors in the Sandburg TRIO Upward Bound program during the 2016-2017 school year graduated from high school. The Sandburg Upward Bound program receives $270,375 per year from the U.S. Department of Education to provide educational, social and cultural services to selected Knox County students. The goals of the program are to assist students in achieving academic success while in high school, develop well-rounded citizens and assist students with their transition into post-secondary education, with the goal of obtaining a four-year degree.

Participants in the Sandburg Upward Bound program must meet program eligibility criteria and be Knox County high school students in the Abingdon-Avon, Galesburg, Knoxville or ROWVA school districts. Students must be first-generation college-bound students and/or meet income guidelines. The program is free of charge and serves 65 students annually.
