The Carl Sandburg College women’s cross country team has earned NJCAA Academic Team Award honorable mention for the third straight year after its outstanding work in the classroom during the 2016-17 academic year.

The Chargers posted a 3.08 cumulative GPA, highest among Sandburg squads for the second year in a row. Two of the team’s runners — sophomores Shayla Kozak (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and Ashlynn Steel (Erie, Ill./Erie) — earned Academic All-Arrowhead Conference honors in both of their years with the Chargers.

Teams had to have at least a 3.0 overall grade point average to be eligible for the honor. Teams with the highest GPA in each sport were named an NJCAA Academic Team of the Year, with other qualifying teams earning honorable mentions. A record 740 NJCAA teams posted a 3.0 GPA in 2016-17.
