Chargers Knock Off No. 19 Muskegon to Cap Battle in the Dells

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis.

The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team capped a 2-2 weekend at the South Suburban Battle in the Dells with a thrilling victory over a ranked opponent.

The Chargers (2-3) closed out the tournament with a 25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-13 win over 19th-ranked Muskegon (Mich.) on Saturday. Sandburg got contributions from all over, highlighted by a career-high 38 digs from sophomore Adre Vetter (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden). The Chargers also got 17 kills from freshman Josalyn Owens (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln) as well as 26 assists and four aces from sophomore Emma Derry (Augusta, Ill./Southeastern).

Sandburg nearly rallied from a two-set deficit Friday against Kansas City (Kan.) in its opening match before falling 25-15, 25-16, 20-25, 22-25, 15-7. Owens led Sandburg with 10 kills, while freshman Hannah Thompson (Blandinsville, Ill./West Prairie) had 26 digs and eight kills. Vetter posted a team-leading 28 digs for the Chargers.

The Chargers bounced back Friday with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 sweep of Henry Ford for their first victory of the season. Thompson and sophomore Lexi Strange (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) each had six kills to pace Sandburg. Vetter added 20 digs and four aces.

Sandburg was in position to take a commanding two-set lead against seventh-ranked Kirkwood (Iowa) in its first match Saturday but ultimately fell 23-25, 29-27, 25-14, 25-22. Thompson posted a double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs. Owens added nine kills, and Strange put down eight kills. Vetter’s 33 digs tied a career high, which she would break in the Chargers’ next match.

Sandburg will kick off its Arrowhead Conference schedule by facing defending league champion and eighth-ranked Sauk Valley at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Dixon.
