Guilinger, Hazell Finish in Top 20 in Women’s Golf Season Opener

The Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team had two members post top-20 finishes Saturday as the Chargers opened their season in the Mount Mercy Early Bird Classic at Hunters Ridge.
Freshman Hayley Guilinger (Thomson, Ill./West Carroll) placed 14th with a team-best 19-over-par 91, and Claudia Hazell (Melton, Australia/Victoria University) tied for 19th with a 96 for Sandburg. They helped the Chargers place fourth in the six-team event with a total of 386.
Central won the tournament with a 338 team score, followed by Mount Mercy (344) and William Penn (347). The Chargers finished ahead of Mount Mercy B (389) and Clarke (401).
The Chargers, whose six-member roster is all freshmen, also saw Renee Scheider (Lena, Ill./Lena-Winslow) shoot 99 to tie for 24th. She was followed by Emily Franzoni (Canton, Ill./Canton) with a 100, Katelyn Davis (Henderson, Ill./Galesburg) with a 101 and Grace Scott (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) with a 110.
Sandburg’s next tournament is the Augustana-Highland Classic on Sept. 2-3 at Highland Springs in Rock Island.
