Sandburg Puts 2 in Top 5, Places 4th as team in Charger Classic

The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team had two finishers in the top five and place fourth as a team Thursday as it hosted the Charger Classic at Lake Bracken Country Club.

Sandburg freshman Bryce Grafton (Orion, Ill./Orion) finished second with a 3-over-par 74, just one shot behind medalist Mitchell Steiner of Southwest Tech (Wis.). Sophomore Nate Bizarri (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) shot 75, which was good for fifth, but his score didn't count toward the Chargers’ team total of 319 as he was competing as an individual.

Brady Grafton (Orion, Ill./Orion) also shot in the 70s for the Chargers by posting a 78 for the day. Sophomore Ryan Hansen (Neponset, Ill./Kewanee) posted an 82, while freshmen Andrew Welgat (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) and Brayden Reece (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) carded an 85 and 86, respectively.

Black Hawk fielded two teams, which finished in the top two spots among the 12-team field. The Braves’ Black team shot 306, while their Gold squad shot 308. Southwest Tech totaled a 310, nine strokes ahead of the Chargers.

Joining Bizarri as individuals competing for Sandburg were sophomore Anthony Neve (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) with an 87 and sophomore Michael Curry (Petersburg, Ill./PORTA) with an 88.

The Chargers are in action again Friday with the Fyre Lake Preview at 1:30 p.m. at Fyre Lake Resort in Sherrard.
