Scott (Iowa) struck for three unanswered second-half goals to hand the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team a 3-0 loss Saturday at Kleine Field.

The Chargers (2-3) were unable to break through offensively but got 15 saves from freshman goalkeeper Michael Vega (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/University High). Vega stopped all 10 shots on goal by the Eagles (2-2) in the first half and made five more saves in the second, including a penalty kick.

Scott broke through in the 53rd minute as Dario Gonzalez found himself open in the middle of the box and struck one past Vega’s left side.

The Chargers were whistled for a foul in the box in the 65th minute, but Gonzalez’s penalty kick to the right side of the net was stopped by a diving Vega, keeping Sandburg within a goal.

The Eagles opened up a 2-0 lead in the 77th minute when Armando Trigueros fed a streaking Diego Cruz down the right side, and his shot off the outside of his left foot looped by Vega. Mama Antario closed the scoring with a goal in the 82nd minute for Scott.

The Chargers managed nine shots total, with three on goal. Two of Sandburg’s shots on net came from freshman Mike Pavon (Galveston, Texas/Willis).

“With another game tomorrow, we wanted to give some of our starters a rest, and it was a good opportunity for a lot of our reserves to see extended action,” Chargers coach Kevin Mahlan said. “I thought they did a pretty good job, especially in the first half, and had some quality chances, but we just weren’t able to finish them off.”

Sandburg travels to face Moraine Valley at 1 p.m. Sunday in Region IV action. The Chargers are 2-0 against region opponents.
