Hawkeye (Iowa) netted a golden goal in the first minute of the second overtime period to hand the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team a 4-3 OT loss Monday afternoon at Kleine Field.
The Chargers (4-8-1) came back from three one-goal deficits, getting the second equalizer on Mike Pavon’s (Galveston, Texas/Willis) unassisted goal late in regulation.
After the RedTails (5-4) struck for a goal in the second minute, Daniel Freedman (Newcastle, England/Monkseaton) got the Chargers on the board when he finished off a center pass from Victor Dantas (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/CESEC) in the ninth minute for his ninth goal of the season.
Sandburg’s Guillaume Rosales (Hugo, Okla./Hugo) tied it at 2 with a goal in the first minute of the second half, but the RedTails regained the lead on Kobe King’s 72-minute goal.
Karl Mbouombouo’s shot from the right wing in the 101st minute clinched the victory for Hawkeye.
The Chargers return to Region IV play with a road contest at Morton at 7 p.m. Thursday.
