Sam Walton (Newcastle, England/Monkseaton) delivered a golden goal 45 seconds into double overtime, capping a remarkable comeback by the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team for a 4-3 Region IV victory over Prairie State on Saturday afternoon at Kleine Field.

Walton’s goal in the 101st minute came after the Chargers (3-5, 3-2) scored twice in the final 6 minutes of regulation to force overtime. Victor Dantas (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/CESEC) and Mike Pavon (Galveston, Texas/Willis) each had a goal and an assist for the Chargers, who had dropped a 4-3 decision in double overtime at DuPage just two days earlier.

In the opening seconds of Saturday’s second OT, Pavon took a shot in the box that deflected off a Pioneers (4-3, 4-3) defender and right to Walton, who was all alone a few yards away. After settling the ball, he ripped a shot inside the left post and was swarmed by his teammates in celebration.

Erick Carrasco’s left-footed strike in the 84th minute gave Prairie State a late 3-1 lead. The Chargers, though, got back within one less than a minute later as Pavon rocketed home a shot inside the left post in the 85th. Daniel Freedman (Newcastle, England/Monkseaton) then delivered the equalizer in the 87th minute, taking a pass from Dantas and sending it to the far side of the goal.

Dantas’ run up the middle in the 29th minute tied the game at 1, but the Pioneers took a 2-1 lead into halftime on Gael Terrazas’ goal in the 37th minute).

George Mutimer (Colchester, England/Colchester Institute) made five saves in net for the Chargers, including a pair of dazzling stops in the second half to keep Sandburg within a goal.

Sandburg travels to face South Suburban at 4 p.m. Tuesday in South Holland in another Region IV contest.
