Chargers Wrap Up Regular Season at Parkland Invite

The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team wrapped up its regular season with a 1-3 showing against some top-notch competition at the Parkland Invitation on Friday and Saturday.

Each of the Chargers’ losses in the tournament came against teams ranked in the top nine in the most recent NJCAA Division II poll. Sandburg lost in five sets to No. 9 Illinois Central on Friday and was swept by second-ranked Parkland, the defending national champion, in its second match of the day. The Chargers came back to sweep East Central Missouri to begin Saturday and closed the tournament with a hard-fought, four-set loss to No. 5 Lincoln Land, last year’s national runner-up.

Josalyn Owens (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln) led the Chargers (22-14) with 14 kills in a 23-25, 25-15, 18-25, 25-23, 15-8 loss to ICC. Lexi Strange (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) contributed 10 kills and 13 digs, and Emma Derry (Augusta, Ill./Southeastern) had 38 assists and 21 digs. Adre Vetter’s (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) 31 digs led Sandburg on the defensive end, and Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) added 4.5 blocks for the Chargers.

Parkland handled the Chargers 25-14, 25-19, 25-19, with Owens’ eight kills again leading Sandburg. Vetter had 17 digs, and Strange put up a pair of blocks.

Strange came through with a team-best 13 kills in a 26-24, 25-17, 33-31 sweep of East Central Missouri. Mayberry, Owens and Hannah Thompson (Blandinsville, Ill./West Prairie) each added nine kills in the win. Derry handed out 29 assists while picking up 19 digs, and Vetter led Sandburg with 29 digs.

Sandburg closed with a 25-10, 34-32, 24-26, 25-21 loss to Lincoln Land despite 12 kills from Strange and 11 apiece from Thompson and Owens. Thompson also had 20 digs, and Owens had a Sandburg-best five blocks in the defeat. Derry’s 37 assists led the Chargers, and Vetter’s 30 digs were tops among the team.

Sandburg earned the third seed in Region IV District A and will host sixth-seeded Triton at 6 p.m. Wednesday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in the quarterfinals of the Region IV District A tournament. The semifinals and finals will be played at noon and 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Lake County.
