The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team put together its most complete effort of the season in a 6-1 thrashing of McHenry County on Friday night at Kleine Field in a contest that was shortened because of lightning in the area.

The Chargers (6-9-1 overall, 6-4-1 Region IV) struck for four straight goals in the match’s first 31 minutes and took a 4-1 lead into halftime while giving Kevkwe Akpore a victory in his first game as interim coach. Sandburg added two more goals in the second half before a lightning delay in the 71st minute. The game, which had just become official at that point, was called shortly thereafter.

Sam Walton (Newcastle, England/Monkseaton) scored twice and had two assists to lead the Chargers, while Daniel Freedman (Newcastle, England/Monkseaton) also scored twice and assisted on a goal. Mike Pavon (Galveston, Texas/Willis) added a goal and two assists for Sandburg.

An inspired Chargers offense peppered the Scots (7-8, 5-6) with 19 shots on goal. Freedman opened the scoring in the 16th minute when he took a centering pass from Walton and rocketed a shot from 20 yards out into the top left corner of the goal. Just 74 seconds later, Pavon dropped off a pass in the box for Victor Dantas (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/CESEC), who blasted a shot inside the right post for a 2-0 Sandburg lead in the 17th minute.

Walton set up Pavon for a goal in the 28th minute, and the two connected again in the 31st minute as Pavon slipped and passed back to the left wing for Walton, whose shot skimmed the crossbar and deflected down into the goal for a 4-0 lead.

After a Scots goal in the 45th minute, Freedman led Walton on a run down the left side, and his shot easily beat the keeper inside the right post. Freedman finished off the scoring in the 65th minute when he cleaned up a loose ball in the box.

George Mutimer (Colchester, England/Colchester) got the start in net and didn’t allow a goal while needing to make just one save in 58 minutes of action.

The Chargers host Waubonsee on Saturday in another Region IV match. The contest, originally scheduled for 1 p.m. at Kleine Field, has been moved to 2 p.m. at Galesburg High School.
