Freshman Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) had a double-double off the bench and three other Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball players scored in double figures as the Chargers handled Knox JV 76-49 on Wednesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

Robinson finished with 11 points and a season-high 10 rebounds for the Chargers (7-2), who are unbeaten in three home contests. Another freshman from Peoria High, Eryon Byrd (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) also had 11 points in a reserve role to help lead a 34-point night from the Sandburg bench.

“Our bench guys came in and gave us some great minutes, especially in the second half,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “Deandrey and Eryon in particular played with really good energy and made a lot of positive plays for us. If we get contributions like that, we can be a tough team to beat.”

Sophomore Matt Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) scored a team-best 14 points for Sandburg despite sitting much of the second half as the Chargers led 36-15 at halftime. Point guard Kourtlandt Martin (Evansville, Ind./Central) had 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting for Sandburg. Freshman forward T.J. Pendleton (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) came up just shy of a double-double, totaling nine points and eight rebounds.

The Chargers, who entered the game second in NJCAA Division II in field goal percentage at 53.2 percent, shot below their season average but a still-solid 45.1 percent (32 of 71) for the contest.

Sandburg’s lone deficit came at 2-1 in the opening minutes. A 12-0 run highlighted by a pair of Pendleton rebound baskets gave the Chargers their first double-digit lead of the night at 19-5 with 9:20 left in the first half. Sandburg’s largest advantage came at 60-28 midway through the second half.

The Prairie Fire, coached by Galesburg High School graduate Garrett Williams, were led by Jeremiah Horton’s 16 points. John Tsahageas had a game-high 11 rebounds for Knox JV.

Sandburg’s next contest is 3 p.m. Saturday at Bryant & Stratton (Wis.) before the Chargers host Culver-Stockton JV at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 to begin a four-game homestand.
