Galesburg, IL

Carl Sandburg College Theater presents An Evening of Contemporary Drama from Nov. 16-18 in the Fine Arts Theatre, Room F118, on the Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd.

Each performance features the new play, “The Private Room,” written by Black Hawk College professor emeritus of theater Dan Haughey, in addition to four scenes directed by Sandburg students and assistant professor of theater Susan Sharp. Show times are 7 p.m. each night, and a reception and discussion with Haughey will follow the opening-night performance.

“The Private Room” premiered off-Broadway last summer, and Sandburg’s production of it will be just its third worldwide. The dramatic work tells the story of a business college president, faculty member and student who are trapped on campus during a blizzard.

Performances also include “The Genius” (directed by student Nick Thomas), “Echo” (directed by student Shane Corbin), “The Illuminati of Drama Libre” (directed by Mian Mehraab Azhar) and “Two Slatterns and a King” (directed by Sharp).

“It’s been several years since we’ve had students direct, but it’s an invaluable experience and presents them with an awesome opportunity to see a stage production from a different perspective,” Sharp said. “There’s a diversity to the scenes the students will be directing. Each one has a different lesson or moral for the viewer.”

Tickets will be available at the door one hour prior to each performance. Tickets are $8 for adults; $4 for senior citizens and veterans; $2 for non-Sandburg students; and free to Sandburg students, faculty and staff with a College ID. Patrons under 12 will not be admitted.
