Women's Basketball Tops Lake County for 1st Victory

The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter Saturday at Lake County for a 50-39 victory, its first of the season.

The Chargers (1-1) took a 28-22 lead into halftime but entered the fourth quarter trailing the Lancers (1-3) 35-33. Sandburg outscored Lake County 17-4 in the final period.

Sandburg got a game-best 19 points from sophomore Madison Lowe (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap), who hit five 3-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds. Danayzia Stuckey (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) added 17 points and six boards for the Chargers.

Whitney Wynkoop (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) came off the bench to pull in a team-high eight rebounds for Sandburg, and Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) had four of the Chargers’ seven steals on the afternoon. Willow Porter (Wyoming, Ill./Stark County) had seven rebounds for Sandburg.

Deja Mayes scored a team-high 18 for Lake County.

The Chargers will play their home opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium against No. 18 Illinois Central.
