The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team rode a huge third quarter to a 67-43 throttling of McHenry County on Saturday afternoon at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

After going into halftime down 24-23, the Chargers (3-7) opened the third with 13 straight points and 20 of the first 22, turning a tightly played contest into a rout. Sandburg outscored the Scots (6-4) 25-6 in the third period and held them scoreless for the first 5½ minutes of the half.

“I’m not sure what got into us, but the second half was the most complete performance we’ve put together this season,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “We’ve had some tough games so far, so to have a half like that was really satisfying. Hopefully we can use that and build on it going forward.”

Leading the way for Sandburg was sophomore guard Alivia Cummings (Peoria, Ill./Limestone), who scored a career-best 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including a 4-for-7 effort from 3-point range. Madison Lowe (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) added 13 points for the Chargers, and sophomore forward Willow Porter (Wyoming, Ill./Stark County) recorded 12 points, a team-best six rounds and three steals.

Freshman guard Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) scored seven and also had three thefts for Sandburg, which totaled 11 steals and forced 19 McHenry County turnovers.

Lacey Gardner had 16 points to lead the Scots, and McKaylie Krey added 15.

The Chargers will be out of action for final exams before playing at John Wood at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the first game of a men’s/women’s doubleheader.
