Sophomore point guard Kourtlandt Martin (Evansville, Ind./Central) recorded season high in points for the second straight night, but the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team dropped a 93-86 decision to McHenry County on Saturday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

Martin, who scored 26 Friday night against Triton, put up 28 against the Scots in a losing effort. He finished 8 of 19 from the floor and made 11 of 15 free-throw attempts, but the Chargers (10-4) couldn’t find a way to string together enough stops against McHenry County (4-6).

The Scots scored the last eight of the first half to take a 40-32 lead into the locker room. Sandburg closed to within 56-52 with 10:25 to go on Martin’s teardrop in the lane, but McHenry County answered with a Corrington Jones 3-pointer, Isaih Riley trey and a Riley layup on its next three possessions to push its lead back to 64-52 with 9:24 left. The closest Sandburg got after that was 90-86 with :24.2 left on a Tyler Houston (Knoxville, Ill./Knoxville) 3-pointer.

Houston finished with 14 points, including a 3-for-6 night from long distance. Matt Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) had 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds for the Chargers, and Ben Stipp (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) scored 10, tying his season high.

Jones scored 15 points to lead six McHenry County players in double figures.

The Chargers will be out of action for final exams before playing at John Wood at 7 p.m. Friday.
