The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team built a big lead and withstood a late push to defeat Augustana JV 56-45 on Tuesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

Freshman Jordan Price (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) and sophomore Willow Porter (Wyoming, Ill./Stark County) did much of the damage offensively for the Chargers (2-7). Price scored a season-best 14 points to lead Sandburg, while Porter put up 13 points along with eight rebounds and three blocks.

In the first half, Porter was 5 of 6 from the floor and Price 4 of 5 from the field, as Sandburg shot 42.1 percent (16 of 38) to take a 41-20 lead into halftime. The Chargers then scored the first six of the third quarter for their largest cushion of the night. The Vikings closed to within 11 before both teams went scoreless the rest of the way as Sandburg snapped a six-game skid.

“We really needed to get back in the win column, so it was good to get this one,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “We played really well on both ends in the first half, but we made it a little too hard on ourselves down the stretch. We need to find a way to play a complete game like we did in the first two quarters.”

Sophomore Madison Lowe (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap), the Chargers’ leading scorer on the season, was held to just five points but delivered team highs of 12 points — including five on the offensive glass — and five assists.

Mia Lambert had 16 points to pace the Vikings, and Rachael Lockmiller added 10.

Sandburg’s next contest is 1 p.m. Saturday at home against McHenry County, with the men’s contest to follow at 3 p.m.
