Hansen, Reece Lead Sandburg Men's Golf in Conference Meets

The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team took second place in Arrowhead Conference meets hosted Tuesday by Highland and Wednesday by Illinois Valley.

The Chargers shot 324 as a team Tuesday at Park Hills in Freeport, led by a 6-over-par 78 from sophomore Ryan Hansen (Neponset, Ill./Neponset). Brayden Reece (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) shot an 80, Anthony Neve (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) an 81 and Bryce Grafton (Orion, Ill./Orion) an 85 for the Chargers.

Brady Grafton (Orion, Ill./Orion) posted an 86, and Sandburg got 89s from Andrew Welgat (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) and Michael Curry (Petersburg, Ill./PORTA).

Black Hawk took first with a 305, and Illinois Valley was third at 344. Black Hawk’s Lake Koenig was medalist with a 1-over 73.

Sandburg totaled 325 in Wednesday’s meet at Senica’s Oak Ridge. Hansen and Reece each shot an 8-over 80 to lead the Chargers. Sandburg’s other scorers were Bryce Grafton with an 82 and Neve with an 83. Curry posted an 88 and Welgat a 90 for the Chargers.

Koenig shot even par for medalist honors, and Black Hawk shot 295 to take first as a team. The Braves lead the Arrowhead Conference standings with 15 points after three of five meets. Sandburg has 11 points, and Illinois Valley, which shot 354 on Wednesday, is in third with 10 points.

The conference season concludes next week with Sandburg hosting at noon Tuesday at Lake Bracken Country Club and Black Hawk hosting the final Arrowhead meet at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Byron Hills.
