Softball Finishes Weekend Trip With Sweep of Waubonsee

After dropping a pair of contests Saturday at nationally ranked Joliet, the Carl Sandburg College softball team bounced back to sweep Waubonsee on Sunday on the road.

Key Moment
The Chargers used a three-run third to tie the game, but the Wolves, ranked No. 3 in the latest NJCAA Division III poll, answered back with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 7-3.

Leadoff batter Haley Stevenson (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) went 2 for 3 with a run scored, RBI and a stolen base.

Key Moment
The Chiefs scored two in the sixth to tie it, but the Chargers came back to two in the seventh to go back ahead. Abigail Stranger (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) led off the inning with a single and scored the game-winning run on Stevenson’s RBI groundout. Adre Vetter (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) added an insurance run when she scored on a wild pitch.

Sandburg Star of the Game
Vetter, the No. 9 hitter in the lineup, reached in all three of her plate appearances. She homered in the third, singled and scored in the fifth and walked and scored in the seventh. The sophomore also stole a base.

Freshman pitcher Kylie Stineman allowed just two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk to pick up the victory.

Key Moment
Sandburg blew open a 6-2 game by tacking on nine runs in the top of the fifth. Nine of the Chargers’ 17 hits in the game came in the fifth, including two by Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin). The first 13 batters to come to the plate in the inning reached base.

Benge had a monster performance, finishing a triple shy of the cycle, driving in five and picking up the victory in the circle with a complete-game effort.
