Sandburg Softball Ends Season in Region IV Semis

The Carl Sandburg College softball team saw its season end Saturday with a pair of losses in the semifinal round of the Region IV tournament. The Chargers dropped a 7-2 decision to Madison (Wis.) and were eliminated with a 2-1 loss to Highland later in the day. The fourth-seeded Chargers ended their season with a record of 18-33.

Key Moment
After the Chargers were retired in order to start the game, the Wolfpack jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Madison’s rally included a bunt base hit, stolen base, a Chargers error and a two-run double.
Sandburg Star of the Game
Freshman Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) doubled for the Chargers’ only extra-base hit, scored a run and drove in a run.

- The Chargers took an early lead on a two-out base hit to left from Madison Benge (Stronghurst, Ill./West Central) that scored Abigail Stranger (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon).
- The Cougars scored both of their runs in the fourth. Back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning tied the game. A two-out error by the Chargers brought home the go-ahead run.

Benge finished 2 for 3 and drove home Sandburg’s lone run of the game. She also pitched four solid innings in the circle, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks.
