Carl Sandburg College freshman Nancy Jebet (Eldoret, Kenya/Tulwo) blew away the field at the Region IV women’s cross country championship Saturday, becoming the first Chargers woman to win the region title.
Jebet’s performance highlighted a day that saw Sandburg have three runners (two on the women’s side, one on the men’s) earn All-Region IV honors and the Chargers women finish runner-up in the team standings.
Jebet won the women’s 5-kilometer race in 19 minutes, 19.13 seconds, beating runner-up Calista Stefaniak of Moraine Valley by 62 seconds. Chargers sophomore Anastasia Beetler (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) wasn’t far behind that, placing fourth in 20:25.41 to join Jebet on all-region team.
The Sandburg women’s team finished second to Sauk Valley in the team standings, with the Skyhawks totaling 41 points to the Chargers’ 56. It’s the fifth time Sandburg has finished second in the Region IV championship (2005, 2008, 2009 and 2011).
In the men’s 8K, freshman Freeman Shoemaker (Oquawka, Ill./West Central) took 13th with a time of 28:52.04 to pace the Chargers and earn a spot on the all-region team. Sandburg finished sixth in the men’s team standings.
